Mental load: an invisible challenge for couples

17 March, 2024 How are you mom?

You probably already know this: mental load refers to all the tasks and responsibilities related to managing the home and family , which often fall mainly to mothers.

And what about the impact of mental load on the couple ? It can be beneficial when tasks are fairly distributed, but can also become a source of conflict and exhaustion if it is not expressed and shared.

The mental load goes far beyond simple household chores, also encompassing thinking about the emotional well-being of children, their daily life at daycare or school, as well as several other aspects of their lives. This load can often remain invisible and unrecognized by the spouse, which can lead to frustrations and tensions within the couple.

So here is an interesting exercise to do as a couple . Classify the tasks into four categories: what you absolutely must do, what you could do, what you would like to do and what you would like to do. This exercise will allow you to better visualize the distribution of responsibilities and open up communication within the couple .

The goal is to become aware of the mental load, share it fairly and define priorities to relieve both partners. You can then openly discuss your expectations, your needs and work together to find solutions that will reduce the mental load and strengthen your relationship.
