In the hustle and bustle of modern family life, stress and anxiety can quickly creep into everyday life. Between homework, extracurricular activities, work obligations, and household chores, it’s crucial to have the tools you need to manage these stressful times. Here are 10 simple yet effective techniques the whole family can adopt to reduce daily stress.
Square breathingThis breathing technique is easy to learn, even for children. To do it, simply imagine yourself drawing a square in the air:
- Inhale for 4 seconds (side 1)
- Hold your breath for 4 seconds (side 2)
- Exhale for 4 seconds (side 3)
- Leave your lungs empty for 4 seconds (side 4)
Repeat this cycle three to five times. This exercise is also excellent to do together before a stressful moment (an exam for children or an important meeting for parents, for example!).
The quiet cornerDesignate a calming space in your home. Stock it with comfy cushions, books, art supplies, soft music, and of course, our calming kit ! Encourage everyone in the family to head there when they feel the stress coming on. The Family Gratitude ListEvery night at dinner, ask everyone to share one thing they are grateful for today. This regular practice helps focus on the positive, even on tough days. Don’t have time to do this every day? Make it part of your weekly family meeting!
The “mental stop” exerciseTeach the whole family to use a “mental stop” when anxious thoughts arise. Simply imagine a big red STOP sign, then consciously redirect your thoughts to something positive or neutral.
Guided meditation for familiesThere are many guided meditation apps and videos that are suitable for children. Why not make it a weekly family activity? Sunday evening is a perfect time to start the week off right! Not a fan of meditation? Opt for our yoga capsules that are perfectly adapted to children, available in the Wellness section of our Online Magazine!
The Creative JournalEncourage each family member to keep a creative journal: a journal where everyone can write, draw, stick… whatever the form and the result! The important thing is to have the opportunity to express and vent your emotions regularly and in a positive way.
The “worry box”Create a box where everyone can drop a piece of paper with their concerns. Once a week, if possible during your family council, open the box as a family and discuss the concerns that have been dropped in it, of course looking together for solutions to the problems discussed.
Family stretchingEstablish a family stretching routine every day, at a time that works for you. Just 5 minutes is enough to release built-up physical tension and create a moment of family connection.
The “5-4-3-2-1” techniqueWhen anxiety rises, practice this grounding exercise. Take the time to name:
- 5 things you see
- 4 Things You Can Touch
- 3 Things You Hear
- 2 things you smell (smells)
- 1 thing you taste
This exercise is a great way to bring attention back to the present moment and calm the mind.
The decompression ritualCreate a family ritual to mark the transition from stressful activities (work, school) to family time. It can be as simple as changing when you get home, giving a group hug, or even sharing a snack together.
Remember that stress management is a skill that can be learned and perfected over time. The important thing is to find the techniques that work best for your family and practice them regularly. By incorporating these tools into your daily routine, you will not only create a more peaceful family environment, but you will also be giving your children valuable life skills.
Remember: It’s normal to feel stress (to learn more about “good stress,” watch this video !). What matters is how we respond to it. With these techniques at your disposal, your family is well-equipped to face everyday challenges with greater calm and resilience.
