Practical tips for introducing children to finance

16 February, 2024

Since children generally have difficulty understanding abstract concepts, it is best to use concrete examples when teaching economics and finance .

So, Laurence, a psychology professor and founder of the Parent qui apprendre platform, suggests starting with simple concepts , for example by showing children real banknotes and coins while allowing them to handle them and teaching them the value of each coin. Also take the time to discuss with them how we get money and how we use it , encouraging them to ask questions.

To make learning more fun, you can also play games like Monopoly, which is a great way to introduce money management, payments and saving . Our General Store also offers a hands-on experience to learn about finances in a relaxed way , as kids can earn tokens to trade or save up for bigger rewards.

You can also take educational trips to places like banks and let kids complete transactions while shopping . Also take the time to teach older children about the real value of money by associating tasks with different levels of pay and discussing the time and effort it takes to earn money . Also encourage them to save for things they want , by depositing money in a bank or tracking their savings in a notebook or Excel spreadsheet.

Finally, it is important to answer children's questions and break the taboo around talking about money , so as not to perpetually avoid this subject. The progressive and interactive approach to economics and finances will allow children to develop essential financial skills for life!
