ONE ROOM A MONTH CHALLENGE Declutter and optimize your kitchen: Practical guide for effective organization

06 January, 2025

The kitchen is truly the heart of our homes. It’s where the whole family gathers, where meals come to life, and where we spend a lot of our time. But how do you keep this vital space organized and functional? Here’s our complete guide to transforming your kitchen into an optimal and enjoyable space to use.

Step One: Clean Up

The secret to a well-organized kitchen starts with a good declutter. Since it's a room that easily accumulates objects, gadgets and impulse purchases, and which is used a lot on a daily basis, take the time necessary to do things well. Don't hesitate to divide the work over several days to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Downloadable lists

To support you in this crucial step, we have created practical tools:

  • List of things to eliminate
  • Checklist of things to organize
  • List of things to get

These same lists are also found in Octave in a digital version to be checked.

Tips and tricks

Store items that you only use a few times a year in a separate space. The cabinet above the refrigerator is often the ideal place for these items:

  • Fondue skewers
  • Lobster Claws
  • Nozzles and pastry bags
  • Popsicle sticks and molds
  • Cookie cutters

Organize your pantry foods by category, placing them in bins when possible:

  • Breakfast foods (cereal, oatmeal, jam, etc.)
  • Pasta, rice, couscous and other cereals
  • Condiments (ketchup, mayonnaise, soy sauce, etc.)
  • Oils and vinegars
  • Desserts and snacks

Store small appliances that you only use occasionally in a space in the basement, garage or in your food storage room: the juice extractor, food processor, raclette oven, fondue pot, etc.

Step Two: Optimize

The little autonomy thing

Even at a young age, your children can start to participate in preparing their lunch. Proceed in stages:

Around the age of 5-6 years:

Simply ask them to fill their lunch box themselves with the food you have prepared. To make them even more independent, place the food in clearly labeled bins in the fridge! One bin for meals, one bin for snacks and one for desserts.

Around the age of 7-8:

Ask them to prepare certain parts of their lunch (make a sandwich, cut up fruit or raw vegetables, etc.)

Around the age of 9-10:

Your children are now ready to prepare their entire lunch, with the help of our lunch box label .
